Backlights at The Rock Shop April 6, 2011 | 10:14 am

I don’t like shopping, but I do like The Rock Shop. Mostly because I don’t have to shop there. Actually I’m allowed to play on their stage with Backlights, like I did last night, which is pretty neat. The staff is super nice and the sound and backline are great (thanks Paul!). Here’s a song we captured with our voice recorder from last night:
07-Lanterns
Goldenboy played after us and they were pretty awesome. We totally dug the guitarist and her performance with the Gibson SG. We wish them luck on the rest of their tour!
Ok, that’s all, for now.

Joe for Backlights on Radio March 1, 2011 | 01:07 am

I hope some of you caught our radio show on Darkroom Presents a couple weeks ago. Well, to return the favor to Gabe Galvin for having us on the show and being a gracious host (he even made Tyler a delicious sandwich!), I recorded a little spot for the Darkroom. I captured it on my voice recorder just now in its natural state, streaming from WNYZ 87.7 on www.indiedarkroom.com.

Have a listen!

My influences when recording this spot included Walter Kronkite, The Twilight Zone, and Barry White.

You can tune in to Gabe’s show on Tuesday nights at midnight.

Sake Blogging IV: Mystery Edition February 8, 2011 | 06:54 pm

This sake came to me in a jar whose label I cannot read. This sake represents one of my many noteworthy failures of understanding. Here it is posed next to my new Summer Holiday 7″ from Wild Nothing, which contains the very worthwhile track, “Lovers Like Vultures”, which is on neither the Gemini album nor the Golden Haze EP.

It had a full-bodied taste and smelled of pungent clementines and spruce. This one made me feel like a million bucks.

And check out this remix of our song “Lake” by Matt Conti. It’s pretty slick!

Lake (sapphire remix)

Joe, it’s time for you to rock the Jheri curls and white lace gloves my friend…

Backlights is a “Best of NYC Emerging Artist 2010″! January 7, 2011 | 10:17 pm

The Deli, the magazine on the New York indie scene beat, says we are one of the best emerging artists in New York City! To be precise, we are the seventh best emerging band in the “psych rock / shoegaze / noise pop / lo-fi” category!

Go here to see the Deli’s Best of NYC

It feels damn good to be an emergent shoegaze noise-fi band.

Also congrats to our friends Swingset Committee, who are the fifth best emerging Electro Pop band.

Thanks Deli!

At Spike Hill!

Last night’s show at Spike Hill December 15, 2010 | 03:39 pm

Hey folks, thanks for coming out. Y’all looked fabulous in your winter attire!

Sunny Breezes – That’s last night’s performance of our newest song. It came right after a super-long break between songs (2 mins 7 seconds!) due to the failure of the house kick pedal. I had to replace it with my own, which, for some reason, took an exorbitant amount of time to do. Strange that it only felt like 15 seconds! It must have been the Fezziwig Ale that dulled my senses to the point where I totally lost track of time. Anyway, Joe, I owe you one.

The opening band were The Isles, who have been around for a few years, but I think they have a new lineup. The drummer had a nice, soft touch, as evidenced by his failure to destroy the equipment, like I nearly did, or push the bass drum off the stage, like the drummer from the last band, The Clox, was about to do, before he got up and moved it back into position. He actually had to do that after every single song, so it became sort of a gag by the end of their set. The soundman ultimately admitted, “We need to get a bigger brick.” I’ll say!

All in all, ’twas a fun, wintery evening. Thanks to everyone for coming out, and thanks again to Spike Hill! We’re currently booking shows for January, so stay tuned!

In case you didn’t catch on, we are celebrating the fact that our album art is ready and we will shortly present our debut EP for you to consume and enjoy.  Times are such that I order my sake not in carafes or bottles, but in walls:

This one made me feel like twenty-six million bucks.
