Sake Blogging II May 28, 2010 | 07:24 pm

Yonetsuru represents my return to sake blogging with a vengeance.  Here it is posed with one of my favorite album covers.  This one smelled like Big League Chew, had a nice strong alcohol finish, and made me feel like a million bucks.

Bruar Falls May 11, 2010 | 08:51 pm

Sunday night was one for the ages.  We played a free show at Bruar Falls the way shows ought to be: with handpicked friends filling out the line up!  Last King of England opened the evening with gusto and Boyd Shropshire followed us with a gorgeous set.

Bob, our portable recording device, recorded snippets of our show from the soundbooth.  Here’s a new song we debuted at the show called “Lanterns”: listen to the mp3 while you read and viddy the pictures..

Here’s Last King of England, who kindled the Sunday evening fires with solo songs,  then shifted gears half-way into the set when our own Tyler backed him up on drums and Collin (Last Year’s Model) manned the keyboard-bass for some blood-pumping punk.

Then we did our thing! We enjoyed some great sound stewardship from soundperson Isabella.

We also enjoyed the enigmatic blessings of the Artist formerly known as Prince (we didn’t ask questions about the deco and neither should you).

Boyd Shropshire took over after us:

Boyd was cool enough to accept our invitation to play this show with us, and was flanked by pals Chase on guitar and backing vocals and Stirling on lap steel and bass.  Backlights are big fans of what Boyd & Co are doing.  They played cavernous, psyche-flooding songs full of meandering imagery and devilishly original vocal harmonies.  Look at me losing myself to verbosity just trying to describe it.  And a good lap steel player can put me in a real tizzy.  Which I was in.

So thanks to all who came out, thanks to Angelina Yang for the photos, and we hope you all had a Happy Mother’s Day.

PS: Album soon!

Recording the Keyboards April 20, 2010 | 01:22 pm

This weekend we went to Cil’s to set up shop and record some of the keyboard tracks.  Cil talked a little bit about her recording process:

Her peer-review process:

Oh no March 31, 2010 | 07:39 pm

I was recently clued in to Stuff White People Like.  I was dismayed to learn that all the danceable hooks in the world won’t get white friends in the audience to dance.  See #67, Standing Still at Concerts:

… when white people go to concerts at smaller venues, what to do they do? They stand still! This is an important part of white concert going as it enables you to focus on the music, and it will prevent drawing excess attention to you. Remember, at a concert everyone is watching you just waiting for you to try to start dancing. Then they will make fun of you.

Luckily, under #41 Indie Music:

To a white person, being a fan of a band before they get popular is one of the most important things they can do with their life.

Now’s your chance!

Sake Blogging I March 30, 2010 | 02:55 pm

mmm

Since this is my first post and my first ever piece of writing about sake, I figure I should set the bar low and impress you all later by exceeding expectations.

Sara no Kaze: a junmai sake polished to 60% grain size. I selected it because it came with a free thimble-sized drinking glass and was named after someone who spells Sara the right way.  This one made me feel like a million bucks.
